Drum Nant y Gorlan

The walk up Drum Nant y Gorlan isn't long, but it's steep enough to make you feel properly earned that view at the top. This peak sits above Llanwrtyd Wells in Powys, one of Mid Wales's quieter market towns, and once you're up there the landscape just opens out across the Cambrian Mountains.

What you're getting is honest upland walking - no visitor centre, no facilities, just rough grass and bracken leading to a trig point with panoramic views over moorland that seems to stretch forever. On a clear day you can see right across the mid-Wales ridges. In poor weather it's a bit grim, admittedly. The ascent takes maybe 45 minutes depending on your pace and fitness, so it's the sort of thing you can slot into a morning or afternoon without committing your entire day.

This works brilliantly if you're based at Welsh Glamping nearby (under 4 miles away) and want something more strenuous than a riverside stroll but less demanding than tackling one of the major peaks. Walkers will absolutely get the point of it. Families with capable kids will find it manageable, though younger ones might grumble on the steeper bits.

There's no entry fee or official opening hours - you just turn up and walk. Free parking is usually available near the trailhead. The best time is spring through autumn when the ground isn't waterlogged, though even then it can be boggy underfoot. Don't expect crowds. This is proper wild Wales, not a polished tourist spot.
