Stepping into this contemporary gallery space feels like entering someone's rather well-curated living room - if that someone happened to collect seriously good art. Dragon occupies a converted building that's been stripped back to clean white walls and polished concrete floors, creating the kind of environment where you actually notice what's hanging on the walls rather than fighting with fussy Victorian architecture.

The rotating exhibitions here tend toward the thoughtful end of contemporary work. During my visit, a collection of large-scale photography dominated the main space, each piece given proper breathing room. This isn't a place that crams fifty works into one room and hopes for the best.

Families might find it a bit cerebral for younger children, though teenagers with an artistic bent could well be inspired. The gallery clearly takes itself seriously without being intimidatingly precious about it. Allow about an hour unless something really grabs you - the space isn't huge but the work deserves proper consideration.

It's the sort of place that adds a bit of unexpected sophistication to a Derbyshire break, though don't expect it to fill an entire afternoon.
