Fetch 52

The giant fibreglass dog sitting beside the A52 near Ashbourne is one of those roadside oddities that makes you do a double-take. Fetch 52 is exactly what it sounds like - a massive canine sculpture plonked on the roadside, visible from the road itself. You'll spot it easily enough, though whether you'll want to stop depends on your tolerance for the wonderfully daft.

It's free to pull over and have a look, snap a photo, maybe let the kids clamber around it if the mood takes. Allow about fifteen minutes tops - this isn't a place you'll linger for hours. The appeal is straightforward: it's big, it's a dog, it's quite funny in a very British way.

This works best as a quick diversion if you're heading through Derbyshire anyway, particularly if you've got youngsters who'll find it silly rather than boring. It's exactly the sort of thing that breaks up a long drive. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Callow Top or Sandybrook Lodges are close by - it's worth a five-minute detour rather than a dedicated trip. The Peak District has proper walks and sights that'll occupy a full day; treat Fetch as the amusing punctuation mark rather than the main event. Fair warning though: in bad weather or when light's poor, it looks a bit less charming and more just, well, a fibreglass dog in a field.
