About Dow Crag
Once you're at the top, you understand why the effort matters. The crag drops sheer on one side, and the views sweep across the Coniston fells and down towards the Duddon Valley. It's raw and a bit austere - there's nothing cosy about it, which is precisely what makes it special. Most visitors come for the rock climbing (the crag's a magnet for experienced climbers), but walkers get their moment too.
Allow two to three hours for the round trip from the car park. Spring and early autumn are best - summer can be mobbed, and winter requires proper judgment about conditions. The scramble isn't technical enough for children under about ten unless they're confident on steep ground.
Stay at Great Langdale Campsite just five miles away, and Dow Crag becomes a proper hill day rather than a rushed excursion. BaysBrown Farm Campsite and the glamping at Great Langdale offer more comfort if you'd rather not rough it. You'll want a full day to pair this with walking in the Langdale Valley itself.
