Dovedale

The River Dove cuts through limestone cliffs like someone's carved a proper canyon through the Derbyshire countryside. Dovedale is one of those walks that gets busy for a reason - the scenery is genuinely stunning, with dramatic stepping stones, narrow gorge sections, and towering rock formations that make you feel properly small.

You can walk as much or as little as you fancy. The stepping stones are the main draw and take about twenty minutes to cross, but the full riverside trail stretches for miles if you're up for it. On a sunny day, when the light hits those cliff faces, it's worth every muddy step. Winter's quieter, which some prefer, though the path gets slippery.

It's free to access and managed by the National Trust. Allow at least two hours if you're doing the stones and a bit beyond - longer if you want to tackle the full valley. Families with older kids do well here; younger ones might struggle with the uneven terrain and the scrambling over rocks. Serious walkers will love it, and photographers arrive early to dodge the crowds.

Ashbourne sits just down the road, which makes Dovedale a logical stop on a Derbyshire break. The nearby caravan parks - Woodland (adults-only and well-regarded), Alton's Camping Club site, and Ecopod's glamping - all put you within easy reach. It's the kind of place that rewards going at your own pace rather than rushing through.
