Dornoch Burn

The burn itself is nothing fancy - a modest watercourse that cuts through the landscape near Dornoch, but that's rather the point. You're not here for Instagram-ready spectacle; you're here because it's the sort of place locals actually walk, and there's something proper about that. The Dornoch Burn offers gentle riverside walks that feel lived-in rather than engineered, with paths that wind between grass banks and scattered birch trees. It's the kind of spot where you might spot red squirrels or catch sight of a heron if you're lucky enough, though mostly you'll just enjoy the sound of running water and the space to think.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination that demands hours - an hour's wander there and back is plenty - but it's absolutely worth incorporating into a longer exploration of the wider area. Families with young children might find it a bit tame unless they're the type to potter about building dams and skimming stones, which fair few are.

Being so close to Dornoch Caravan & Camping Park, less than half a mile away, it's ideal if you're based there for a caravan holiday in the Highlands. It breaks up the day nicely between bigger attractions. The Dornoch Firth Caravan Park, further out at 4.6 miles, gives you a different vantage point on the same area. There's no charge for wandering the burn itself - it's just a walk, the way walks should be. Come when the light's decent; these northern waterways can look rather grey in poor conditions.
