Dolgarrog Railway Society

The Dolgarrog Railway Society is a small volunteer-run museum housed in a former quarry railway building near Llanrwst. You get a genuine slice of Welsh industrial heritage here - think restored locomotives, vintage carriages, and the sort of narrow-gauge railway equipment that actually moved slate and stone down from the mountains a century ago. It's hands-on in the best way: volunteers are usually about, happy to chat through the collection's history, and you can sometimes ride a short stretch of track on operating days.

This works brilliantly if you've got kids who aren't tired of trains yet, or if you're a proper railway enthusiast. Adults without a specific interest might find an hour enough. Admission is typically free or a small donation, though opening hours are limited and weather-dependent - it's worth phoning ahead or checking their Facebook page before you head over. Llanrwst is just down the road, so it slots neatly into a morning if you're staying at Erw Glas or Maenan Abbey nearby.

The real appeal is how local it feels. You're not paying premium prices to stand in a polished heritage site. Instead you're supporting genuine volunteers keeping old railways alive. If you're camping in the area and keen on industrial history, the detour from your park is absolutely worth it. Fair warning though: the site can be muddy and exposed to the elements.
