Dockey Wood

Walk into Dockey Wood and you're immediately wrapped in proper woodland - the kind with a real floor of leaf litter and the occasional fallen log to clamber over. It's a small, quiet forest near Berkhamsted, the sort of place locals know well but tourists often miss entirely.

What you get here is straightforward: woodland paths, space to breathe, and a chance to actually hear birds. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no grand attractions - just trees and air. It's decent for a family walk if your kids will entertain themselves with sticks and log-jumping rather than demanding facilities. Serious walkers might find it a bit limited for a dedicated trip, but it works perfectly as a leg-stretcher between other activities.

The beauty of Dockey Wood is that it slots nicely into a Buckinghamshire camping holiday. Base yourself at one of the nearby sites - Merlin Farm is closest at under four miles away and sits near Whipsnade Zoo, so you could easily do a zoo day, then a forest walk, then something else. Hill Farm Camping and the various glamping options in the area give you other jumping-off points around the Chilterns.

Go early morning if you want real peace. Bring proper shoes - it gets muddy. There's no charge as far as anyone can tell, and an hour is plenty unless you're making a serious hike of it. Not the most dramatic woodland in England, but it's free, it's real, and it works.
