Dùnan Muasdail, dun site

A grassy knoll with the remains of an Iron Age dun - that's Dùnan Muasdail, sitting quietly above Muasdale near Tarbert on the Kintyre Peninsula. The dun itself is mostly earthwork now, the stonework long since robbed for local building projects, but you can still make out the circular fort's outline if you know what you're looking at. It's the kind of place that rewards a bit of scrambling about and imagination - stand there and picture the defensive walls, the small settlement tucked inside.

This is proper archaeology, not a polished visitor attraction. There are no signs, no interpretation boards, no admission fee because there's nothing to charge for. You just turn up and explore. It takes maybe half an hour to have a good look around, longer if you're interested in Iron Age settlement patterns and want to sit with a map working out sightlines to other duns in the area.

History types will find it worthwhile, especially if you're already poking about Argyll's archaeological landscape. Families with young children might find it a bit abstract - there's no obvious 'thing' to do, just a bump in the ground. Walkers, though, will appreciate it as a natural loop-walk destination if you're based at Muasdale Holiday Park or Killegruer Caravan Site nearby.

Go on a clear day when you can actually see across the Kilbrannan Sound towards Arran. That's when the dun's strategic position makes sense. Otherwise, it's a quiet, honest bit of local history that asks nothing of you except curiosity.
