Dùn Righ

The walk up Dùn Righ is short enough that you won't regret it, but steep enough that you'll feel you've earned the view. This low peak sits above Lochgilphead in Argyll, and from the top you get proper views across the town and out toward the Loch Fyne landscape beyond. It's the kind of hill that locals know and tourists often miss, which is exactly why it's worth the detour.

The ascent takes about half an hour if you're not dawdling, and the path is manageable without being a slog. You're looking at an hour's round trip including time to catch your breath at the summit. On a clear day the vistas across Argyll really do justify the effort - that mix of water, woodland, and distant hills that makes this part of Scotland properly special.

This works perfectly as a morning walk if you're based at The Pod Over By, which sits just six miles away. Families with older kids will find it doable; younger ones might need a bit of encouragement on the steeper sections. It's the sort of walk that gives you a genuine sense of achievement without eating the whole day, which makes it ideal if you're splitting time between a few different spots around Lochgilphead.

Go when the weather's decent - low cloud makes it feel a bit pointless, and you'll lose everything that makes the views worthwhile. Early morning tends to be quieter, and the light across the loch is rather special.
