Dùn an Fhamhair, dun site

The remains of Dùn an Fhamhair sit on a headland near Tarbert, commanding views across the water towards Kintyre. It's an Iron Age dun - basically a heavily fortified settlement - and what you're looking at now are the tumbled stone walls that once formed a circular defensive structure. The site isn't exactly dramatic or towering, but there's something satisfying about standing on the ruins and imagining the families who lived here two thousand years ago.

Walking the site takes maybe half an hour, depending on how much you poke around the stones. There's no visitor centre or interpretation boards, so you'll want to do a bit of reading beforehand if you want the full story. It's the sort of place that appeals to archaeology enthusiasts and serious history types rather than casual day-trippers - kids might find it underwhelming compared to proper castles with walls still standing.

The real draw is the setting itself. The headland walk gives proper coastal views, and you're only a couple of minutes from Muasdale Holiday Park if you're staying local. Killegruer, just three miles away, is equally well-positioned. It's worth the detour if you're already exploring Argyll's Kintyre Peninsula and keen on Iron Age Scotland, but don't shuffle family plans around to see it. Combine it with Tarbert's own attractions and the surrounding walking if you're making a proper trip of the peninsula.
