Dimmingsdale Wood

The woodland paths through Dimmingsdale feel properly isolated, which is rare this close to Stoke-on-Trent. It's a genuine forest walk rather than a manicured park - ancient oaks, streams cutting through the valley, and the kind of quiet you don't get in many places anymore.

You're looking at a couple of hours well spent if you're the sort who actually likes walking without commentary. There's no visitor centre or facilities that we could find - it's free access woodland, the kind you can turn up to whenever. Spring's when it's loveliest, though autumn's got its own appeal if you like golden light through the trees. Go early on weekends to dodge the dog walkers.

If you're camping at Springfields or Field Head Farm nearby, this is ideal for a morning or afternoon break. The area's got proper walking credentials - you're close enough to use it as a leg-stretcher between bigger hikes or as something low-key on a rest day. Don't expect signage or facilities, but do expect actual woodland rather than something designed by committee.
