Dewa Roman Experience

You walk into a Roman fort that's been reconstructed on its original site near Chester, and suddenly the grey Welsh landscape makes sense. Dewa Roman Experience sits right where the legionaries once stood, and the museum does a decent job of bringing that reality into focus through finds, reconstructed barracks, and interactive displays that actually engage rather than bore you senseless.

The fort itself was a proper military installation - home to around 500 soldiers - and the museum lets you wander through what life looked like for them: weapons, pottery, jewellery, everyday kit. Kids tend to perk up at the gruesome bits (Roman medical instruments, anyone?) and the reconstructed soldier quarters give a tangible sense of how cramped and basic the accommodation was. Allow a solid two hours if you're thorough, less if you're just passing through.

It's free to wander the grounds, though there's a charge for the museum building itself - worth checking their website for current prices. The site works brilliantly as a morning stop if you're basing yourself at one of the caravan parks around Chester - Fir Trees or Netherwood are practically on your doorstep. Combine it with a walk around Chester's Roman walls and you've got a proper history afternoon lined up.

Best visited midweek if you can. Weekends bring school groups and it gets a bit hectic. The site's exposed in bad weather, so pick a dry day if you're planning to spend real time here.
