Devil's Quoit

Standing stones don't come much more mysterious than this solitary megalith perched on the Cornish moors near Higher Trekenning. The Devil's Quoit - a single upright stone about eight feet tall - has been marking this windswept spot for roughly 4,000 years, though local folklore insists it's actually a quoit thrown by the devil himself during a particularly heated game.

History buffs will find themselves pondering its original purpose. Was it a territorial marker? Part of a larger stone circle now lost to time? The truth is nobody really knows, which rather adds to its appeal.

Getting there involves a proper moorland walk from the nearest parking, so come prepared with decent boots. The stone itself won't detain you long - twenty minutes is plenty to circle it, take photos and soak up the atmosphere. But the real draw is the wild Cornish landscape stretching in every direction.

Families staying at nearby White Acres Holiday Park or the Newquay sites could easily combine this with a longer moorland ramble. Just don't expect facilities or interpretation boards - this is ancient Cornwall at its most raw and unvarnished. Best visited on a clear day when the views stretch for miles, though the brooding atmosphere on a misty morning has its own Gothic charm.
