Deft Hill

The walk up Deft Hill takes you out of Harrogate's spa-town gentility and into proper Yorkshire moorland within twenty minutes. It's not a dramatic peak - more a rounded rise with cracking views across the Stray and beyond to the distant dales. Worth doing on a clear day, less so when the cloud rolls in and you're just trudging through bracken.

You'll find it quiet, which is the main draw. Families with decent walkers will get on fine - the path is clear enough, though it steepens toward the summit and the ground can be boggy after rain. Most people manage it in under an hour from the car park. No facilities at the top, so bring water.

The real appeal is how accessible it is from Harrogate itself. You're not driving hours to reach high ground - just a short trip out. On a decent morning, the light across the moorland is genuinely lovely, and there's that proper sense of being away from things despite being minutes from town.

It pairs well with walks around The Stray itself, which gives you a full day without going far.
