Deep Hayes Country Park

The reservoir at Deep Hayes sits quietly just outside Leek, the sort of place locals know well but visitors often overlook. It's a proper nature reserve - all water, woodland, and open moorland - where you come to walk the perimeter paths, spot birds, or simply sit with a flask and watch the light change across the water.

There's nothing flashy about it. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no themed play areas. What you get instead is two or three miles of walking depending on which route you fancy, decent views across the Staffordshire moorlands, and genuine peace. The paths are well-maintained and accessible enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the walk a bit long without much to break it up. Birdwatchers will have a field day - this is a proper site for spotting waterfowl and woodland species.

It works brilliantly as a half-day or morning stop if you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Glencote is barely a mile away, and Glamping at Holly Grove Farm about the same distance. Slot it in before heading to Leek town centre for lunch, or make it the main event on a quieter day. Spring and autumn are cracking times to visit when migration brings rarer birds through.

Free to access, no booking needed. Allow 90 minutes to two hours if you're doing a proper loop. Bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing. Don't expect facilities - it's a walk in the woods, not a day out.
