Decoy Pool sits just outside Craven Arms, a modest water body that punches above its weight if you're after a straightforward lakeside walk. The pool itself was historically managed as a decoy for wildfowl - hence the name - and it retains that quiet, understated charm you don't always find near market towns.

It's the sort of spot where you turn up, walk the perimeter, spot whatever waterfowl are about that day, and feel like you've properly switched off. The walk takes forty minutes or so depending on pace. There's nothing theatrical about it - no visitor centre, no café, no Instagram moment waiting to happen. Just water, vegetation, and the occasional flash of movement that reminds you why people bother with birdwatching.

Families with younger kids will find it manageable but possibly brief - they'll want another activity lined up for the afternoon. Serious walkers and birdwatchers will get proper value, especially in spring and autumn when migration brings interesting visitors. Photographers after atmospheric shots of light on water and reeds will enjoy their time here too.

It's free to access and there's parking nearby, though facilities are minimal. Go early or late in the day if you want the best light and fewest crowds.
