Deadh Choimhead

The walk up Deadh Choimhead is a proper hill-bagging experience without being utterly brutal. Starting from near Oban, you're looking at a straightforward hike to a 629-metre peak that rewards you with genuinely excellent views across Argyll - Loch Awe spreads out below, and on a clear day you can see why people get excited about this corner of Scotland.

It's the sort of peak that works for confident walkers rather than casual strollers. The ascent takes roughly two hours each way depending on fitness, and while it's not technical climbing, the terrain can be boggy and the weather rolls in fast. Go in proper boots and bring waterproofs even if the forecast looks optimistic.

Historically the name translates to something like 'hill of watching', which fits - it's been a vantage point for centuries. The summit's bare enough that you get unobstructed views rather than fighting through trees, which is the whole point of coming up here.

If you're staying at one of the local holiday parks - Loch View Luxury Pod or Loch Awe Holiday Park are both within striking distance - this makes a cracking day out. Families with older kids who don't mind a proper walk will get a lot from it. Younger ones might find it tedious. Bring a packed lunch and settle in at the top for an hour. The walk is free, obviously, and you can access it year-round, though winter ice makes it sketchier. Worth the effort if you're serious about bagging peaks around Oban.
