Dashwood Mausoleum

You'll find this striking octagonal structure perched on West Wycombe Hill, a few miles north of Marlow - and it's far more theatrical than your average tomb. Built in the 1760s by Sir Francis Dashwood, founder of the famously scandalous Hellfire Club, the mausoleum is pure architectural showmanship. It's basically a golden ball sitting atop a flint and stone chamber, visible for miles across the Chilterns, and it dominates the skyline in a way that feels deliberately provocative even now.

The walk up to it is more rewarding than standing right beside it. The views back towards the Thames Valley are genuinely lovely, and you get a proper sense of why Dashwood chose this spot - total dominance of the landscape. The structure itself is best appreciated from a distance; close up, the weathering is obvious and you can't actually go inside. Most visits run to twenty minutes or so, unless you're the type to sit on the hill and take in the Chiltern vistas.

Walkers will get the most from this - it's part of longer rambles across West Wycombe Park's open ground, and the location makes it a logical stop rather than a destination in itself. Families might find the oddball history engaging, though kids can get restless once they've circled the building twice. The camping sites at Bella Vista and Home Farm sit within easy reach if you're basing yourself in the area for a few days. It's free to visit, no facilities at the site itself, and honestly worth twenty minutes during a wider explore of the Marlow region rather than a dedicated trip.
