Munces Wood

The woodland floor at Munces Wood is carpeted with bluebells come spring - proper show-stopping stuff. This small forest tucked just outside Marlow is the kind of place locals know about but tourists tend to miss, which is exactly why it's worth the detour. You get mixed deciduous woodland, dense enough to feel properly secluded despite being minutes from the Thames Valley.

Walks here range from a quick 20-minute amble to longer rambles depending on which path you take. The paths are well-trodden but can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are wise. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - it's just you, the trees, and the occasional jogger. That's the appeal. Families with primary-aged kids will manage fine; teenagers might get restless if they're not into woodland exploration.

It's free to visit and open whenever - standard woodland access. Allow at least an hour if you're doing anything beyond a circuit walk. Time it for late April or May if the bluebells are your thing, though even in autumn the mix of oak and beech makes it worth visiting.
