Darnbrook Pot

The walk down to Darnbrook Pot catches you off guard. You're ambling through moorland near Skipton, and suddenly the ground opens up - a proper sinkhole that swallows a stream whole. It's only a modest cave, mind you, nothing like the show caverns further north, but there's something compelling about watching water disappear underground and knowing you can actually see where it vanishes.

This is a spot for people who like their geology hands-on. Walkers doing the limestone country around here will stumble across it naturally - it's not a major detour, but it's worth pausing for. The cave mouth is small, so don't expect underground chambers or stalactites. What you get is the raw mechanics of karst landscape: water at work, rock being dissolved, the landscape actively reshaping itself. Kids find it absorbing for ten minutes or so, which is honest.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no signs, no facilities, no fee. It's just there, accessible year-round if you don't mind muddy paths. Spring's best when the stream has proper flow. The nearest proper base would be Ribblesdale Pods or Malham Glamping Pods, both within five miles and offering a comfortable platform for exploring this part of the Pennines. Darnbrook Pot works as a stopping point during a longer walk rather than a destination in itself, but if you're in the area doing the valleys and limestone formations, it's exactly the kind of detail that makes a day proper worthwhile.
