Darling Dogs of May

There's a sculpture in West Berkshire that stops you dead. The Darling Dogs of May is a public artwork near Newbury that's become something of a local talking point - the sort of thing you'd drive past a dozen times before actually stopping to look properly.

It's exactly what the name suggests: dogs rendered in stone or metal, depending on which piece catches your eye. Public art installations can be hit or miss, but this one's got enough character to warrant a proper visit rather than a casual glance from the car park. The detail work is genuinely impressive, and there's something rather moving about the scale and placement of it all.

This works best as part of a broader mooch around the Newbury area rather than a destination in itself. You're probably looking at twenty minutes to half an hour here - enough time to walk around it, take some decent photos, and actually absorb what you're looking at. Worth timing it for late afternoon when the light's better and Newbury itself won't feel quite so hectic. Free to view, naturally, and accessible whenever you fancy a wander over.
