Dalton Park

The walk into Dalton Park takes you through proper Yorkshire countryside just outside Beverley - flat, open farmland that feels a world away from town despite being barely three miles out. It's a nature reserve, so you're looking at woodland paths, wetland areas, and if you're lucky with timing, some decent birdwatching opportunities. The reserve does what it says on the tin without any fuss. You won't find visitor centres or ice cream vans here, just habitat and the chance to actually notice what's living in it.

Best suited to walkers and anyone with a genuine interest in birds and wildflowers rather than families with restless toddlers - there's not much in the way of facilities, and the appeal relies entirely on what you spot rather than what's laid on for you. A couple of hours is reasonable if you're taking it slowly with binoculars. Come spring or early summer when the reserve is actually teeming with life, rather than a grey winter afternoon when it just feels empty.

It works well as a proper walk break if you're staying at Cherry Burton Leisure Park nearby. Combines the holiday park facilities with an actual reason to get outside and use your legs, which is exactly how these things should work. Free to access and worth the detour if you're the type who'd rather watch a marsh harrier than visit another heritage site.
