Kilnwick Park

The wetland walks at Kilnwick Park, just outside Beverley, are genuinely rewarding if you time it right. You're moving through proper Yorkshire countryside here - reed beds, open water, and the kind of birdwatching territory that makes twitchers genuinely excited. Expect to see lapwing, redshank, and if you're lucky, visiting wildfowl depending on the season. Spring and autumn are when it really comes alive.

It's a nature reserve rather than a manicured attraction, so there's no visitor centre or café to speak of - bring a thermos and plan accordingly. The trails are manageable for families with reasonably mobile kids, though the paths can get boggy after rain. You'll need proper footwear. A couple of hours is enough to work through the main trails without it becoming a slog.

Birdwatchers will get the most from Kilnwick. If you're just after a gentle stroll with nice views, it's decent but not essential - there's no dramatic scenery or dramatic moments. The appeal is in the quiet observation, the sound of water and reeds, the chance to actually spot something interesting.
