Dale Head

A steep pull up from Borrowdale, Dale Head sits at 2,473 feet and delivers proper fell-walking credentials without requiring a full day's commitment. The summit rewards you with unobstructed views across the Lake District's central peaks - Helvellyn dominates to the east, while Catbells and the Newlands Valley spread out below like a detailed map you've somehow stepped into.

Getting there means tackling the path from Seathwaite or, less brutally, starting from the Honister Pass side. Most walkers allow two to three hours depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath and take photos. The fell itself is straightforward moorland - no scrambling nonsense - which means families with teenagers and moderately fit adults will manage it fine. Younger children might find the relentless gradient tiring rather than fun.

The real draw is the isolation. You'll see far fewer people than on the honey-pot peaks around Keswick, which sits just five miles or so north. This makes it ideal for walkers wanting genuine fell experience without the crowds. Weather matters enormously - in cloud, it's a slog. In clear conditions, it's magnificent.

If you're staying at Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club or Castlerigg Hall, Dale Head makes a cracking afternoon expedition. It pairs well with a weekend exploring the Borrowdale valley or a longer circuit taking in Catbells. The climb itself is free, obviously - just park sensibly and don't expect facilities up top.
