Dalchonzie

You won't find much signposting for Dalchonzie, and that's rather the point. This Iron Age fort sits on a hillside near Crieff, its ramparts still visible after more than two thousand years - low banks of earth and stone that trace the outline of what was once a proper settlement. The walk up takes twenty minutes or so, and the views across Perthshire are genuinely worth the leg work.

It's not dramatic in the way some archaeological sites are. You won't find reconstructed buildings or interpretation boards explaining every detail. What you get instead is the raw landscape and the satisfaction of standing where people stood, seeing what they saw. History buffs and keen walkers will find it rewarding; families with young kids might lose them after the initial scramble. Allow an hour from start to finish, longer if you want to sit and linger.

Admission is free, as you'd expect from an unmanaged site. Go on a clear day if possible - the hillside can be boggy, and the views are half the experience. It sits well with a longer Perthshire walking holiday. Comrie Croft and Loch Earn Leisure Park are within easy reach, both making decent bases for exploring the broader area. Crieff itself is close enough for supplies and a proper meal afterwards.
