Dairy Wood

Walk into Dairy Wood and you're immediately wrapped in proper old-growth woodland - the kind where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a working forest near Belper, so expect timber operations alongside stretches of genuine quiet, which somehow makes the whole thing feel more real than a manicured country estate.

The woodland itself rewards wandering. Paths weave between mature trees, and in spring the forest floor erupts with bluebells. There's enough space to properly lose an hour or two without feeling like you're walking in circles. It's not a destination for the postcard moment - no dramatic viewpoints, no visitor centre - but that's rather the point. You come here to move through trees, breathe forest air, maybe spot a deer if you're quiet enough.

Families with older kids will get on fine. Younger ones might lose interest after an hour unless you're making a game of spotting wildlife. Serious walkers can link it with other routes in the Derwent Valley. It's genuinely free, though there's no infrastructure to speak of, so come prepared.

If you're based at Poplars Farm or any of the Carsington parks nearby - all within 5-6 miles - this makes a solid morning escape from the caravan. Combine it with a coffee stop in Belper and you've got a proper woodland half-day. Go midweek if you can. Weekends draw more foot traffic and the spell gets broken faster.
