D Reservoir

Water stretches out flat and still, surrounded by the gentle Yorkshire countryside just outside Driffield. D Reservoir is a straightforward spot - a decent-sized lake that's popular with walkers and anyone after a bit of peace and quiet away from the busier attractions. The main appeal here is the walk around the perimeter. It's manageable rather than strenuous, and you'll spot the occasional fisherman settled in for the day. Birdwatchers do quite well out of it too, especially if you know what you're looking for. There's something rather calming about these East Yorkshire reservoirs - no fuss, no crowds, just water and sky.

The walk takes a couple of hours depending on your pace and whether you stop to actually look at things. It's the sort of place that works best when you're already staying in the area at one of the nearby parks - Greengrass Park and Kingfisher Lakes are practically on the doorstep, while Dacre Lakeside Park and Blue Rose Country Park are close enough for a morning outing. Fair warning though: this isn't a destination in itself. Families expecting facilities, a café, or something visually spectacular will be disappointed. What you get is countryside and a decent walk, which is rather the point. Kids will manage it fine if they're the outdoor type, but there's nothing to keep them entertained once the novelty of "it's a lake" wears off. Go if you're after a quiet stroll and you're already staying nearby. Skip it if you're after a proper tourist experience.
