Main Drain

The Main Drain is one of those thoroughly unglamorous Yorkshire waterways that somehow delivers proper peace and quiet. It's essentially a long, straight drainage channel running through the flat Wolds landscape near Driffield, lined with reeds and the occasional willow. Not exactly picturesque in the postcard sense, but genuinely calming if you're after somewhere to walk without crowds.

Anglers love it here - the drain supports pike, perch, and roach, so you'll see people settled in for the day with their rods. Birdwatchers do well too, especially in winter when you might spot snipe or winter waders. The walking is straightforward; you can follow the bank for miles without any real obstacles, which means it suits families with younger kids and older relatives who want a gentle pace.

There's no visitor infrastructure - no cafe, no car park, no facilities worth speaking of. You simply find a spot along the bank and get on with it. That's actually its charm. The nearest proper amenities are in Driffield, three miles south, but honestly you won't need much.

If you're staying at Greengrass Park Static & Touring Caravan Park or Kingfisher Lakes Glamping & Lodges nearby, it's a decent half-day outing rather than an all-day event. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's better and wildlife's more active. Don't expect Instagram moments - expect solitude and the occasional heron. That's the whole point.
