Walking into Cwmllwyd Wood feels like stepping back in time - this is proper ancient woodland, the kind with trees that have been here for centuries. You're south of Swansea, and the difference between the urban sprawl and this place is immediate and absolute.

It's a working nature reserve rather than a manicured visitor attraction, so don't expect car parks or information boards. What you get instead are winding paths through broadleaf forest, with plenty of opportunity to spot woodland birds and, if you're lucky, the occasional roe deer. The canopy is dense enough that even on hot days it stays cool and shaded. The woodland floor is thick with moss and fallen leaves - sensible footwear essential.

Walkers will appreciate this far more than casual visitors. You're looking at a couple of hours minimum to feel like you've actually explored it properly. Families with young children might find it a touch underwhelming unless they're the type to get excited about fungi identification and bird calls. Serious nature enthusiasts, though - photographers, botanists, birdwatchers - will find it genuinely rewarding.

Timing-wise, late spring and early autumn are when the woodland feels most alive. Summer can be a bit muggy and overgrown. It's free to access, which is a genuine bonus when you're based at nearby Three Cliffs Bay Holiday Park - a solid spot for a coastal break that needs a bit of green space thrown in.
