Cwm Rhaeadr Forest

A steep-sided valley carved by water and time, Cwm Rhaeadr Forest sits inland from Llandovery with the kind of raw, moody atmosphere that makes you understand why Welsh valleys feature so heavily in local folklore. The forest rises sharply on both sides, densely planted with conifers that block out much of the sky even on bright days. A stream runs through the bottom, audible long before you spot it through the trees.

The walk here isn't long - most people reckon on an hour if you're being leisurely - but it's properly steep in places. Good boots matter. Visit after recent rain when the waterfall's actually worth the trek. Summer can feel oppressively damp in the valley - spring or autumn is genuinely better.
