Crugyn Ci

The walk up Crugyn Ci is a proper workout, but from the summit you get views across the Elan Valley that make the huffing and puffing worthwhile. It's not a famous peak - you won't find crowds of day-trippers - which is exactly why it's worth the effort from Rhayader.

This is moorland walking territory. The terrain gets boggy in patches, especially after rain, and there's no marked path to speak of, so navigation skills help. Allow a good three hours for the round trip if you're reasonably fit; longer if you're taking it easy. The peak itself is modest in height but the isolation works in its favour - you feel properly away from things up there.

Walkers will get the most from Crugyn Ci. If you're after gentle rambles or need entertainment for restless kids, look elsewhere. But if you like the hills quiet and don't mind a bit of bog underfoot, this scratches the itch. The Elan Valley has a wild quality that rewards proper walking.

Staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Elan Oaks and Wyeside are both close by - gives you the perfect base for exploring the valley properly. You can do Crugyn Ci as part of a longer walking holiday, mixing in the Elan Valley reservoirs and smaller hills nearby. Late spring through early autumn is best; the ground dries out better and the light stays around longer for evening walks.
