Cruach na Casaich

The walk up Cruach na Casaich takes about ninety minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, and you'll earn proper views across the Kintyre peninsula the whole way. It's not a technical climb - more of a steady grind through moorland with the occasional rocky section - but the height (around 2,000 feet) means you get genuine distance on the landscape below. On a clear day you can see across to Arran and down the length of the peninsula towards the Mull of Kintyre. Worth noting that the weather here turns fast, so don't set off if the cloud is sitting low.

This is one for walkers rather than families with toddlers, though older kids who don't mind a long uphill slog will manage it fine. The paths are reasonably well-trodden but can get boggy in the lower sections after rain - waterproof boots aren't optional. There's no marked interpretation or facilities at the summit, which is part of its appeal really; you get genuine wildness rather than a crowded tourist spot.

Campbeltown is the nearest proper town, about eight miles south, where you can stock up on supplies before heading out. If you're staying at Carradale Bay Holiday Park just up the coast, Cruach na Casaich makes a solid day's walking that doesn't require driving to some far-flung trailhead. The park's location gives you access to the whole Kintyre peninsula without fighting traffic to reach it.
