Cruach Muasdail

The walk up Cruach Muasdail is short, sharp, and absolutely worth your time if you're staying around Tarbert. This modest peak rises about 300 metres from the surrounding moorland - not exactly Alpine, but the views across the Kintyre peninsula and out towards the islands make it feel taller than it is. On a clear day you can see right across to Islay, which alone justifies the effort. The route itself is straightforward enough for most fitness levels, though the final push gets steep and the ground can be boggy lower down, so proper boots matter. Allow an hour and a half there and back if you're not hanging about for photographs. It's not crowded like Ben Lomond gets, which is a genuine bonus. Families with confident walkers will manage it fine; younger kids might struggle with the steepness towards the top. The real appeal here is how accessible it is - you're looking at genuine Highland landscape without needing the full-day commitment of the bigger mountains. If you're based at Muasdale Holiday Park just down the road (less than a mile away), you could do this in an afternoon and still be back for tea. Even Killegruer Caravan Site, two and a half miles out, makes it a manageable excursion. Bring waterproofs. The weather changes fast, and you can feel rather exposed up there when the mist rolls in. Worth doing.
