Crouch Hill Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured nature reserve, Crouch Hill Wood sits east of Dunmow and delivers exactly what you'd want from an Essex forest - tall oaks, plenty of shade, and the kind of quiet that makes you realise how little of it you actually get elsewhere. The main draw is the walking. Trails wind through decent-sized trees, and on a dry day it's straightforward enough for families with children old enough to manage uneven ground. Muddy patches are guaranteed in winter, mind you.

You're looking at a solid hour to two hours depending on pace and whether you dawdle. It's free to access and there's no visitor centre or facilities, so bring water. The woodland sits roughly five miles from Dairymeade Farm Glamping, which means you could easily fit this into a longer day if you're based there - walk in the morning, glamping in the evening.

Who gets the most from it? Walkers and families wanting a proper forest feel without the crowds of somewhere like Epping. History buffs might find it less rewarding unless ancient woodland specifically interests you. Children under five will probably get bored before you've done a loop.
