Crose Mere

The water at Crose Mere sits perfectly still on most mornings, reflecting the sky back at you like a mirror someone's just wiped clean. It's a proper little lake on the edge of Ellesmere, tucked into the Shropshire countryside, and it's the kind of place you'd miss entirely if someone hadn't told you about it first.

There's not much to it, frankly. You come for the walk round the perimeter, the bird spotting if that's your thing, and the general sense of peace. It's shallow and reedy in places, deeper and clearer in others. On a decent day you'll see mallards, coots, and if you're lucky, something rarer. The footpath is straightforward - manageable for families without being a slog.

This works best as a short stop rather than a full day out. Allow an hour for a proper wander, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking photos or sitting on the bank with a flask. It's free, which helps, and there's no need to book. Best visited early morning or late afternoon when the light's decent and the crowds (what crowds there are) thin out.

The nearby caravan parks - Colemere is barely a mile away, Fernwood not much further - make this a natural slot into a wider Ellesmere Lakes trip. You could knock out Crose, Colemere, and the other meres in the area across a couple of days without too much driving about. Perfect for walkers after something low-key rather than dramatic.
