Colemere Countryside Site

The mere itself is the draw here - a proper glacial lake that dominates the Shropshire landscape just outside Ellesmere. You're looking at around 40 acres of open water surrounded by woodland, the sort of place where the light changes across the water every twenty minutes and you actually notice it. There's a footpath that loops the perimeter, takes about an hour if you're not rushing, and it's genuinely pleasant rather than strenuous.

Historically it's one of several meres dotted around this corner of Shropshire - geological leftovers from the last ice age - so if you're into that kind of thing, there's proper substance to the landscape. Birdwatchers come here regularly. The water's too cold and weedy for swimming, but the banks are accessible in places and worth a wander.

It works well as a leg-stretcher if you're based at Colemere Caravan Park itself, which sits right on the edge, or at Fernwood just over a mile away. If you're doing a longer park-hopping holiday around the area, combining this with a walk around Ellesmere town itself - which has its own charm if you like proper market towns - makes sense. Don't expect facilities or visitor infrastructure. There's no café, no gift shop, no interpretation boards. It's just a lake and the woods around it. Some people will find that refreshingly uncomplicated. Others might wish for a bit more to do. I'd allow a couple of hours if you're combining it with nearby attractions, but realistically an hour's walk is all most people need.
