croft ruins - Taunich?

Stone foundations crumble into the Argyll hillside near Colintraive, and that's basically it - but the simplicity is rather the point. Taunich's croft ruins are what remains of 18th and 19th century Highland life, a scattered collection of tumbled walls and collapsed outbuildings that tell you more through absence than presence. You wander amongst them, piecing together where the hearth was, where animals sheltered, trying to imagine the damp and the struggle.

It's the sort of place that appeals to history types and walkers who don't need interpretation boards to feel connected to the past. Children will get restless within twenty minutes unless they're the kind who enjoy clambering over old stonework and inventing stories about who lived here. The site itself is free and accessible, though there's no formal infrastructure - just the ruins and the view across toward Cowal.

Allow half an hour if you're passing through, longer if you're genuinely interested in crofting heritage. The landscape around Colintraive is genuinely lovely, and combining this with a stay at Glendaruel Caravan Park - just three miles away - makes sense if you're exploring the area's archaeological sites. The park itself is rated exceptionally highly, and from there you've got decent access to other Highland walks and ruins dotted through Argyll.

Truthfully, Taunich won't blow your mind. But it's exactly the sort of unremarkable, unpolished ruin that captures something real about how people actually lived on the Scottish coast.
