Càrn Mòr Dearg

The walk up Càrn Mòr Dearg is one of those Scottish hill ventures that looks modest on the map but rewards you properly once you're on it. You're climbing 3,612 feet of Highland terrain with Ben Nevis looming alongside - not quite as tall, but the views of its northern cliffs are absolutely stunning from up here, something you won't get from the tourist-packed path on Ben Nevis itself.

The route takes roughly four to five hours for most walkers, depending on fitness. It's no gentle stroll - the terrain is rough, the weather changes fast, and you'll earn every metre of height. But that's precisely why it's worth doing. You get the sense of actual achievement, and the crowds thin out dramatically compared to Ben Nevis's main route.

This is a hike for people who like proper mountains. Families with younger kids should probably stick to easier Glen Nevis walks; teenagers and experienced walkers will love the scrambling sections and the exposed ridge. Pick a clear day if you can - the panorama across the Highlands is genuinely outstanding when visibility's decent.

Stay at Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park, just 3.3 miles away, and you can knock this out as a day venture. The park itself sits beautifully positioned for accessing multiple mountain routes. Ben Nevis Holiday Park is another solid base if you're planning several days in the area. Either way, bring proper kit and check the forecast - this isn't the place to wing it.
