Càrn Dubh'lc an Deòir

The walk up Càrn Dubh'lc an Deòir isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough to catch you off guard. From Inverness, you're looking at a proper Highland hill rather than a casual stroll - the kind where you notice your legs on the way down more than the way up.

Once you crest it, the views open right up across the Moray Firth and back towards the Cairngorms. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the effort. The summit cairn itself is modest, nothing dramatic, but the perspective of the landscape around you is what makes it worthwhile. You can see why the old Highlands folk bothered with places like this.

It's the sort of walk that suits people who like a bit of graft without committing to a full day in the mountains. Two to three hours round trip if you're steady. There's no marked path worth mentioning, so boots with proper grip matter more than you'd think on the scree sections. Don't attempt it in cloud cover unless you know what you're doing - navigation becomes a genuine issue.
