Càrn Dearg Meadhonach

The walk up Càrn Dearg Meadhonach is proper steep, but the views across the Ben Nevis massif make the slog worthwhile. You're looking at a serious hill-walking experience, not a casual stroll - this isn't the sort of thing you dash up in trainers and a t-shirt.

It's a mountain for experienced walkers with decent fitness. The summit sits at a respectable height, and the approaches from the Fort William side can be boggy and relentless. The reward is visibility across the whole Nevis range on a clear day - you can pick out the shape of Ben Nevis itself from certain angles, which is proper satisfying if you've already done that one.

Give yourself a full day for this, and check the forecast before you go. Scottish mountain weather turns in minutes, and you don't want to be fumbling with a compass in cloud. The terrain demands good boots and navigational skills, particularly on descent when your knees are shot.

If you're based at Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park or Ben Nevis Holiday Park near Fort William, you've got an excellent jumping-off point. Both parks put you within striking distance of this and a dozen other walks in the area. Càrn Dearg Meadhonach itself won't suit families with young children or anyone after a quick half-hour outing, but for proper hill walkers wanting to work for their views, it delivers.
