Crinkle Crags - Long Top

The walk up Crinkle Crags is proper steep, especially if you're tackling it from the Great Langdale valley side near Ambleside. Long Top is the highest point of this craggy fell, and the views across the Lake District fells are absolutely worth the slog - you can see right across to the Coniston range on a clear day. The name says it all: the ridge is lumpy and broken, with several false summits before you reach the actual top. Count on three to four hours return if you're starting from the valley floor, depending on fitness.

This is walkers' country, pure and simple. Families with older kids who don't mind a proper climb will find the scrambling sections fun rather than daunting - there's exposed rock but nothing technically difficult. Younger children will struggle; it's not a casual stroll. Summer and early autumn are best - the ground gets boggy in winter and spring, and you'll want visibility for the fell-top sections.

The real draw here is the sense of isolation up top combined with the dramatic fell landscape. You're not queuing for photos like you would be on Scafell Pike. If you're camping at Great Langdale Campsite or the glamping sites at Great Langdale, this is an obvious choice for a full day out. The campsite is literally at the valley entrance, so you can roll out of your tent and start walking. Free to access, naturally - just park sensibly and respect the fell.
