Crier Hill

Climbing up from Ilkley Moor, this modest 363-metre peak offers proper Yorkshire views without the crowds that plague its more famous neighbours. The summit sits just southeast of Ilkley town centre, making it an easy escape from the spa town bustle below.

Walkers will find the ascent straightforward enough - about an hour's steady climb from the town through heather moorland and rough grassland. The path isn't always obvious, mind you, so decent boots and a map are wise. Once up top, the panoramic sweep takes in Wharfedale, the distant Pennines, and on clear days you can spot the Three Peaks hulking on the horizon.

Families with older children will manage fine, though little ones might find it a slog. The real appeal here is the sense of space and solitude - you're far more likely to encounter grouse than other hikers. Best tackled in decent weather when the views actually materialise.
