Cricket Bat Willows

The Shropshire countryside around Shrewsbury holds some proper woodland walks, and Cricket Bat Willows is one worth seeking out if you're camping nearby. It's essentially a small woodland area where - yes - they actually grew willows specifically for cricket bat production. The trees are mature now, which means good shade and that genuine forest feel you don't always get in managed parks.

You won't find facilities or visitor infrastructure here. It's a walk through the woods, really - the sort of thing that works brilliantly if you've got restless legs from a few days at Love2Stay or Condover Park. The historical angle is solid for a bit of context (English cricket, local industry, that whole story), but this isn't a museum. You're here to walk among the trees and maybe understand a bit of local heritage.

If you're bringing kids, expect them to find it interesting for a solid hour, less if they're not keen on just walking. Older children and adults who actually like woodland will get more from it. There's something quite nice about seeing trees that have a genuine purpose beyond just being pretty.

Allow 45 minutes to two hours depending on how far you explore. Best in spring and early summer when the growth is lush. Go when the weather's decent - muddy paths aren't brilliant. It's a free walk, no nonsense, no crowds. The sort of thing that rounds out a park holiday nicely rather than being the main event.
