Crûg

The walk up Crûg isn't long, but it's proper steep in places - you'll feel your legs working. This peak in the Ceredigion hills sits just outside Tregaron, a small market town that serves as your jumping-off point. The summit itself is windswept and open, giving you views across the Cambrian Mountains that stretch in all directions. On a clear day you can see for miles; on a grey one (and there are plenty of those in West Wales), you'll be mostly in the clouds.

It's a decent outing for walkers who like a proper leg-stretch without needing rope or serious kit. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might grumble at the gradient. Expect to spend 90 minutes for the round trip, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath.

The real appeal is the sense of being in proper mountain country without the crowds you'd get in Snowdonia. There's something satisfying about standing at the top of something you've actually had to work for. If you're camping at Cambrian Mountains Glamping and Camping just down the road, it makes an excellent morning adventure before a leisurely afternoon back at the site. Go early if you can - the light's better and you'll miss any hint of weekend foot traffic. Bring a waterproof; the weather changes fast up here.
