Creagan Dubh

The walk up Creagan Dubh from Colintraive takes about forty minutes if you're reasonably fit, and it's one of those peaks that rewards the effort without demanding mountaineering skills. The view across the Kyles of Bute is genuinely cracking - you get the water, the hills rolling away, and on a clear day the sense that you've climbed somewhere that actually matters.

It's a proper hill walk rather than a casual stroll. The path is clear enough but steep in sections, and you'll want decent boots. The summit itself sits at just over 400 metres, which means it's manageable for most walkers but still feels like an achievement once you're up there. There's nothing built at the top, which is precisely the point - you're here for the views and the quiet.

Families with older kids will find it engaging. Younger ones might struggle with the gradient, though plenty of people seem to bring them. Allow an hour and a half for the whole outing if you're going at a sensible pace and stopping at the top to catch your breath.

Glendaruel Caravan Park sits just down the road, making this an obvious choice if you're based there for a few days. It combines well with other walks in Argyll - you could easily do this as a morning stint and explore the Kyles themselves in the afternoon. Free to access, naturally. Go early or mid-week if you want any sense of solitude.
