Creag a'Chapuill

The walk up Creag a'Chapuill isn't long, but it's steep enough to warm you up properly. From Lochgilphead, you're looking at a fairly quick ascent to what amounts to a proper little viewpoint hill - nothing mountaineering about it, but the views across Argyll are genuinely impressive on a clear day.

You get the Knapdale countryside rolling out beneath you, lochs glinting in the distance, and on a good day the hills beyond are worth the huff and puff. The summit itself is marked and uncomplicated. Allow an hour there and back if you're not dawdling, perhaps ninety minutes if you want to sit about and take it in.

It suits walkers after something achievable without needing technical kit or hours to spare. Families with kids old enough to manage the climb will find it rewarding - the view's genuinely the payoff here rather than the walk itself. Solo hikers appreciate how quickly you can get some decent height and solitude.

Free to access, obviously. No facilities at the top, so bring water if you're parched. Best tackled in dry conditions; the path gets slippery when wet and there's little shelter once you're exposed higher up.

If you're staying at The Pod Over By down the road, this works as a cracking half-day outing before returning for a proper dinner. It's the sort of walk that fills a morning without eating your whole day, and the effort-to-view ratio is well worth it. Not flashy, but effective.
