Crane Field Hill

The walk up Crane Field Hill isn't long, but it's steep enough to make you feel like you've earned the views. From the top near Skipton, you get proper panoramic stuff - the Pennines rolling out in front of you, and on a clear day the visibility is genuinely impressive. It's a straightforward fell walk, nothing technical, which means families with older kids manage it without drama. Allow a couple of hours from the car park to summit and back, though you could easily stretch that if you want to potter about at the top.

This is walker territory, full stop. If you're after dramatic scenery or a proper mountain experience, you'll find the ascent a bit short-changed for the effort. But as a morning outing from one of the nearby glamping spots - Hedgerow or Malham are both close by - it works nicely. Decent fitness helps, mind. The path gets boggy in wet weather, which is most of the time round here.

The real value is as part of a broader day out in the Dales. Combine it with a visit to Malham village itself, or spin over to Thornton Hall Country Park if you've got younger kids who need a softer landing. Solo hikers love it. Couples looking for a quiet morning hike? Absolutely. Day-trippers expecting a cable car and a gift shop? You'll be disappointed. It's free, it's unsupervised, and it demands you bring your own enthusiasm.
