Craigtappock

Craigtappock is a modest hill rather than a dramatic peak, but that's rather the point - it's the sort of walk locals do without fanfare, and all the better for it. You get decent views across Dumfries and Galloway from the summit, rolling countryside stretching away toward the Solway Firth. The walk itself is straightforward enough, nothing that'll test experienced hill-goers but proper rewarding for families or anyone after a couple of hours outdoors without the commitment of a full mountain day.

It's about three miles from Dumfries town centre, so easily reached on foot or a short drive. Being free and unrestricted, you can come and go as you please - no gates, no visitor centre faffing about. Allow two hours there and back if you're ambling, less if you stride. The path is well-enough trodden that you won't get lost, though it's muddy after rain, so decent boots are sensible.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks dotted round here - Southerness, Sandyhills Bay, or Caerlaverock - this makes a cracking morning walk before heading to the coast or exploring the local castles. It's not going to stop you in your tracks, but it breaks up a park holiday nicely and costs you nothing. Kids won't spend hours here, but they'll burn off energy and actually feel like they've climbed something.
