Craigmaid

The walk up Craigmaid, just outside Moffat, rewards you with views that justify the huff and puff to get there. It's not a particularly high peak by Scottish standards, but the climb is steep enough that most people feel they've earned the vista once they reach the top. The path itself is well-trodden and manageable for anyone with reasonable fitness, though it's boggy in places after rain so proper boots matter.

This is walkers' territory, really. If you're after a two-hour round trip that doesn't require technical climbing or scrambling, Craigmaid delivers. The landscape around Moffat tends toward open moorland rather than dramatic peaks, and Craigmaid fits that character - broad views across rolling hills rather than the sheer drops you'd get in the Highlands. Children who've done a few hills before will manage it without complaint, though younger ones might find it a slog.

The nearest caravan base is Howslack Farm, about five and a half miles away, which has proper facilities and strong reviews. Riverside Holiday Park is closer at just under five miles if you're willing to be less fussy. Craigmaid works well as a morning walk before heading into Moffat for lunch, or as part of a wider day exploring the Southern Uplands. It's the sort of unshowy Scottish walk that doesn't feature in the guidebooks as much as it should - no crowds, no visitor centre, just moorland and a decent payoff at the top. Free, obviously.
